GLASNEVIN  NATIONAL  SCHOOL                     28th June 2018

 

Dear Parents / Guardians,

 

School closes at 12 midday today, Thursday 28th June for Summer Holidays and will reopen on Monday 3rd September at 8.20am.

 

School Activity  –   We have had an active year during which all pupils took part in tennis and football lessons.  Pupils in 1st – 6th classes also took part in the usual eight weeks swimming lessons in Ballymun Swimming Pool.  Thanks to the Board of Management who funded the lessons and the GNS Parents’ Association who paid for the bus to and from the pool.  During Active School Week all pupils took part in Tennis, Basketball, Gaelic Football and Frisbee.  We also had a GO Noodle Assembly. 

 

School Reports  –  In accordance with Department of Education & Science guidelines, reports were posted to all parents on 14th June.

 

Green Flag  –  We are delighted to announce that our school has been successful in achieving the Transport Flag which was presented to Mrs McCoy and Delyth Dowling, Ava-Rose Furlong & Eddie Joyce from the Green Schools Committee at an event in The Helix.  Many thanks to Mrs McCoy and the Green Schools Committee for all their very hard work to achieve this.

 

Music and Singing  –  Many thanks to Blanaid Murphy for her commitment throughout the year taking each class for singing lessons on Monday mornings.  Our End of Year Service in St. Mobhi’s Church was a lovely occasion at which the children sang songs which Blanaid had prepared with them.  Thanks also to John Ryan, a parent, who organized for a sing-song session with all classes after our Assembly on 2nd June.

 

Award of Science & Maths Excellence – Pupils, parents and teachers worked together throughout the year to achieve this, our ninth award. All classes participated in Prescribed Science Activities.  Our plaque is displayed in the entrance hall.

 

TY Students  –  We were happy to welcome a group of TY Students from Scoil Chaitríona to school on 29th May.  The group who were working with the Sables Nua Charity gave an excellent presentation to the whole school on their visit to Zambia with Zamda Ireland.  Many thanks also to Rosie Joyce, a past pupil of GNS, who worked with us as part of her TY Work Experience during Active Schools Week.

 

 

School Outings – This year the Juniors (Junior Infants – 2nd class) visited Imaginosity Dublin Children’s Museum in Sandyford on Tues. 26th June and the Seniors (3rd – 6th classes) visited Wells House & Gardens, Gorey, Co Wexford on Tues. 19th June. Many thanks to The Parents’ Association who paid for the coaches for both tours.

 

Cumann Na mBunscoil – Santry Sports – On Mon 21st May and Tues 22nd May,  4th – 6th classes competed in Track & Field events at the Morton Stadium, Santry.  Congratulations to all who participated so well in the Sports this year during which GNS won 13 medals!  Well done to our medal winners – Liana Buckley – Silver for the Relay, Gold for Sprints and Silver for Shot Put, Susannah Patten -Bronze for Hurdles, Silver for High Jump and Silver for Relay, Rebecca Caswell – Silver for Relay, Sara Vasiliu – Silver for Relay, Caitlin Gray – Silver for Relay,  Eddie Joyce – Silver for 600m.  Our 4th class Relay team, Nabbie & Kay Ryan, Jacqueline Major & Charlotte Cullen took home the Bronze medal.

 

Na Fianna –  The annual school football blitz during which 175 boys played, took place in Na Fianna CLG on Wednesday 20th June. St. Pat’s won the ‘A’ Cup and we are very proud to announce that our Senior Boys in 4th, 5th & 6th won the ‘B’ Shield competition.  Many thanks to Mr Ledwith and all the teachers in GNS for helping the boys prepare and also to all the pupils in the Senior Room who gave great support to our team at the Blitz.  Thanks also to Mark McManus for organizing the blitz which was enjoyed by all.

 

School Sports Day –  Our school ‘Sport for All Day’ was held in Griffith Park on Wed 13th June. All the children took part in races and activities during the morning and each child who participated was presented with a medal.  Thanks to the Parents’ Association for supplying refreshments and medals. 

 

Chess  –  Thanks to Shalva and Simon Harshman-Early who facilitated a chess session for pupils in the Senior Room (4th, 5th& 6th) on Thursday 14th June.

 

Sponsored Walk  –  The Parents’ Association organized the annual Sponsored Walk which took place on Friday 1st  June. 

 

Cake Sale  –  Mrs McCoy and the pupils of 1st – 3rd classes held a cake and plant sale on Thursday 7th June in aid of Focus Ireland.  The event was a huge success during which they raised €450.00.  Well done to all involved!

 

End of Year Service  – Our Service took place in St. Mobhi’s Church on Fri 22nd June. During the Service Liana, Rebecca, Evan, Sara, Charlie, Caitlin, Susannah, Ken, Adam and Heather shared their memories of school with the congregation and were then presented with a class photograph, provided by the Parents’ Association.  We will miss them and wish them every success and happiness as they start their 2nd level education.

 

Assembly  –  Our final Assembly of the year took place this morning during which we said farewell to 6th class and attendance awards were presented.

 

Special Assembly  –  On Wed. 27th June we had a Special Assembly during which we said farewell to Mrs Caitríona McCoy who is retiring after 36 years in GNS.  Mrs McCoy will be greatly missed and we thank her for her many years of teaching in GNS and wish her every happiness for the future.

 

The Parents’ Association would like to thank everyone who helped organize and support the many events we had this year, in particular the quiz, cake sale and sponsored walk were a great success in helping to fund school activities. From the monies raised we have been able to support additional fun and learning activities for our children  including the regular supporting of transport costs for school trips and swimming, Sports Day medals and refreshments and Graduation Photos for 6th Class.

Finally, the Parents Association are looking for volunteers to help with refreshing the school yard over the summer, a separate email will circulate with more details soon.
